Sightsavers Works Fiercely For The Rights Of The Disabled

Of all the groups that face discrimination, the handicapped are perhaps the most disadvantaged of all. While there are many reasons for which one might face discrimination of one sort or another, the physically handicapped are some of the only ones who face a very real physical limitation. However, there is absolutely no reason why such people cannot lead healthy and productive lives. Society has many needs, and a person can usually find a place to contribute in spite of a physical limitation.

It is an uncomfortable fact that 80% of the world’s disabled individuals live in third world countries, where there is neither the understanding nor the resources to take care of their needs properly. An affliction of the eyes, in particular, can be a death sentence in these parts of the world.

It is with this understanding that the Global Disability Summit attempts to change these problems. Their work is intended to call attention to the problems faced by disabled individuals every day and to call for greater protections upon the rights of the disabled. The summit was attended this past year by 800 delegates from around the world, and representatives from certain companies as well.

One of those is a UK-based charity called Sightsavers. Sightsavers works throughout the under-developed world to help treat the causes of avoidable blindness and to promote eye health in general. Sightsavers took a very strong and straightforward role in this most recent summit, calling on all member nations to not only guarantee the rights of the disabled but also to guarantee accountability and transparency in the reporting of the same.

With over 300 signatories to this agreement, it would be very hard to call the summit a failure. And beyond the signing of the agreement, a number of countries agreed to specific measures that they would take to help ensure the rights, dignity, and inclusion of those who suffer from disabilities. Nine countries promised to change their laws. Eighteen governments agreed to enact new policies. Thirty-three signatories made monetary contributions, with the largest amount coming from Australia. Australia pledged a total of 16.4 Million for aid to Syria. The UN also got on board with a pledge to change UN policies to allow for greater inclusion within their agencies.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin condemn violation of human rights in Maricopa

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin created the Frontera Fund, an organization that supports protection of human and civil rights in the state of Arizona.

They created this organization so that they could stop the numerous cases where immigrants living in the state were subjected to discriminatory treatment. No other state in the United States has recorded a high number of racial discriminations cases against Latinos like Arizona.

Lacey and Larkin saw it fit to fight the oppression that was facing the immigrants by establishing an organization that would help rights defenders to carry out their role.

Since it was established, the Frontera Fund has worked with tens of organizations, all involved in various activities of defending the immigrants’ community against discrimination.

Lacey and Larkin created the foundation after winning a court case in which they had taken the state to court accusing it of breaking the law when arresting them in 2007.

The court gave them $3.75 million which they are now using to carry out the campaigns they have against the oppression of immigrants in Arizona.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have done a commendable job of fighting injustices for the past four decades. They have used the media outlets to push for justice for all. They are the former owners of the Village Voice Media, a company that owned 17 publications one of them being the Phoenix New Times.

The Phoenix New Times was widely used in exposing the actions of the Former Sheriff of Maricopa County Joe Arpaio. Arpaio was an anti-immigration crusader who did not allow undocumented immigrants to live peacefully in his county. He would arrest anyone he suspected of not having identification documents allowing them to be in the country.

Lacey and Larkin used the Phoenix New Times to expose Joe Arpaio after realizing that he was torturing many immigrants living in Maricopa in illegal jails he had created for that purpose.

They went behind the scenes to investigate all the rot that as happening and what they found out was worrying.

Hundreds of immigrants were held in poorly maintained tent jails with unbearable living conditions. On top of that, they were tortured and some even killed by officers under the orders of the sheriff. Arpaio labelled himself "America’s Toughest Sheriff" as a sign of intolerance to the rule of law.

Arpaio ruled Maricopa County for 24 years and was finally bundled out of the seat in 2017 after years of using his office to shield himself from prosecution. After his ouster, he was charged with ignorance to court orders given in an earlier court case.

He pleaded guilty and a sentencing date was scheduled towards the end of the year. The sentencing however never took place after President Trump pardoned him. Read more: Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey Make The List of Civil Rights Protectors | Philly Purge and Michael Lacey | Crunchbase

Lacey and Larkin are concerned that the immigrants were denied justice by the president.

The fact that Arpaio has gotten away with some serious case of human rights violations in the 21st century is a clear indication that the current administration has no place for multicultural society.
